Routine Maintenance Of Your Auto Cooling System

By Syd U. Dithers

When most drivers think of their autos cooling system all that comes to mind is their radiator " the humble rad. The cooling system of your car keeps your autos engine within normal ranges and provides you both comfortable maintenance free driving and heat from their interior car heater during the cold winter time or to defrost their windshield.

Its like brake or transmission in a vehicle - be it car , truck or SUV. Few think about their fluid levels or the last time maintenance was done on the vehicle. Add in the fact that the car or truck is second hand or used and its anyone's guess. Yet it is a simple and easy matter to check fluid levels and the protection afforded to cold weather freeze-up of the coolant fluids.

How can anyone be taught how to check the coolant level. Simply open up the engine hood when your car has been sitting for a couple of hours. Look for a coolant canister . Its the overflow bottle container and looks simply like a plastic jug. If you do not know how to open your hood - often bonnets today can be a puzzle to open - then consult the auto manual that came with the car , online , or at the worst call your factory dealer or local garage. Just have your auto make , model and year available handy. To judge fluid levels simply look on the side of the coolant overflow container. There will be a marking "cold" or "cold fluid level". Simply compare the two marks - that of the level of the fluid in the coolant container and the mark on the side of the bottle. Do you have an adequate amount ?

Taking good care of fluid levels under the hood can spare you auto repair bills at your local garage and may well keep you away from car and truck dealers for extra years to come. Its well worth the effort all in all and only requires simple and ongoing attention to detail. After all its your car or truck and your vehicle repair or new car replacement costs out of your own pocketbook.

Most of the problems we encounter both in life and as auto owners are relatively simple and come down to basics. In this case its a matter of proper ongoing maintenance of your vehicle's cooling system. If you are unsure of the steps and procedures ask professional help . Your local mechanic , a neighbor or the service department of your local nearby car or truck dealership will be only too obliging to help you out. - 21396

Credit Cards Dos and Don'ts

By Bob Jones

Just ask yourself: is the credit card working for you or are you working for your credit card? Most people's response to this question will depend on how they use their "plastic pal" as credit cards are sometimes known. As many people with burned fingers will tell you, they didn't realize that things had become so bad until too late, because most credit card companies try so hard to make themselves sound like a charity. Well, take it from me, they aren't.

But this is not an anti credit card campaign. They have their benefits - in the USA, for example, if you want to hire a vehicle, you have got to have a (major) credit card. But, consider this scenario:

You get an offer in the mail that sounds good, perhaps it's a new TV or fridge. But it costs $2,000. You have a credit card with a $5,000 limit, so you go out and purchase the product right away. Often, this is how your repayment schedule will work out. Most credit cards charge a minimum percentage of the total balance (usually 2 percent) per month. Assuming the interest rate is 18 percent and you choose to repay the minimum amount of $40, $30 of that will go towards interest and only $10 will come off the $2,000!

Does it sound scary? Well, it doesn't have to be. The moral of the illustration is to use the credit card very, very carefully.

Credit Cards Dos and Don'ts

There is a lot of truth in the advice that credit cards are not a substitute for not having money. Every time you use a credit card this should be the theme song playing in your head. Furthermore, you would do good to remember the following too:

Dos.

1] Always plan for the purchases that you need and those that you only want. You need the essentials, but you just want everything else. The ability to differentiate could assist you plan more wisely.

2] If you are caught up in financial difficulties, it's always a good idea to talk to the credit card issuer who might re-schedule your payments. If you simply default, that only helps to build up an unfavourable credit history and you might find yourself being denied credit in the future.

3] Unless it is an emergency, staying within your credit limits will help you a great deal. If you must spend over the limit, ensure you are within manageable levels, say within 30 percent.

4] If your mailbox is full of information on credit cards with more favourable deals than you currently are enjoying, you may approach your issuer for a better deal. They want to keep you as their customer, so they will listen.

Don'ts

1] Do not use your credit card to purchase household goods. It is too expensive in the long run.

2] Do not only pay the minimum amount necessary. You will end up paying exorbitant amounts of interest. The more quickly you can pay off the debt the better.

3] Never use the credit card to purchase items you can't afford. - 21396

Saving Energy: Driving and Car Maintenance

By Taylor Nelson

More than two-thirds of the total oil consumption of U.S. goes to transportation - mainly in the form of gasoline. An average American consumes 500 gallons of gas annually. And with the unpredictable cost of fuel and the growing concern for the environment, saving energy by becoming a better driver and keeping your car properly maintained becomes a must. Consider the following tips to increase fuel efficiency and therefore, save energy

Proper Driving

Lighten up. Remove unnecessary things from your car. Extra weight consumes fuel.

Avoid idling. Driving 0 miles per hour doesn't mean that you don't consume fuel. A car engine that is running consumes fuel whether it is moving or not. Do not waste fuel by idling to preheat your engine. Once you start your engine, drive.

If you are stuck on a long traffic, turn off your engine. This technique enables hybrid cars to save fuel. By default, hybrid cars automatically shuts down its engine at full stop. Hence, it ceases fuel consumption from idling.

Go inside the restaurant instead of doing a drive thru. Park your car and turn off the engine. Small acts can actually amount to huge savings.

Use your cruise control if your vehicle has one. Activating this feature enables you to maintain a constant speed and of course, to save on fuel.

Drive sensibly. Abrupt acceleration, speeding and hard breaking due to driving aggressively decreases your fuel efficiency by as much as 33% in the highway and 5% if you are cruising in the city.

Avoid high speeds. You car's fuel efficiency lessens when you are on 60 miles per hour.

If you are driving a car with manual transmission, shift to the highest drivable gear. High gear at low speed requires less pressure on the gas pedal compared to low gear at high revolution.

Estimate the distance before you hit break. If you know that a stop light or your final stop is near, avoid accelerating. Excessive acceleration needs excessive breaking, avoid these two situations. Another thing you have to check on is your air-conditioning system, as using it increases your gas consumption. If you could turn it off and just open your windows, just do that. Do not use your roof rack if the item can be placed in your trunk or inside the car. Placing a heavy stuff on your rack produces a drag and lessen fuel efficiency by 5%. Moreover, observe the recommended tire pressure.

If you have the budget, switch to a hybrid car. This kind of vehicle has higher fuel efficiency than the usual gasoline-engine transportations. Furthermore, they have no or almost zero carbon dioxide emission. To be able to save more fuel and contribute to the betterment of the environment, electric cars and other vehicles that use alternate resources are just the answers.

A car that is light, aerodynamic and has a small engine maximizes fuel efficiency. Hence, when you are planning to to buy a car, remember these 3 vital elements that are found in small cars, and not those gas-hungry SUVs.

Car Maintenance

Regularly clean your air filters. Clogged ones stops the air to infiltrate the cylinder which results to decreased quality of car performance and heightened fuel consumption.

Keep your wheels properly aligned.

Have your car checked regularly and subject it for tune up. Also, have your oil changed, to free your cars from fuel efficiency concerns produced by dragging brakes, low transmission fluids and transmission problems.

You take it a little further by carpooling or riding a public transit. Of course, this kind of strategy can save fuel consumption.

Only use the proper type of oil on your car.

Saving energy begins at home and extends on the road. Make these things a habit to save cash, help the environment and extend the service of your car. - 21396

The History Of The Hybrid Car

By Colin Jones

Just where did a hybrid vehicle get it's start? Read on to find out. Hybrid cars are very popular to today's car buyers and there are many reasons why that should be. But before you even think about choosing which hybrid vehicle to purchase, you might want to know a little about the history of the hybrid first.

Surprisingly, hybrid cars were around even before gas-powered cars. Back in about the year 1665, a Jesuit priest by the name of Ferdinand Verbeist began plans for a certain type of vehicle. That vehicle would be very simple, nothing complex, or intricate. Simple was all he wanted.

So Ferdinand designed a car that would have four wheels and would run only on steam. It took about fifteen years of work for Ferdinand to go through with his plan. He laboured to perfect his dream car. But no one knows if he ever finished because there is no evidence that his concept ever came into existence.

Then in 1769, a man with the name of Nicholas Cugnot designed and developed a carriage that was powered by steam. This carriage really did work and it went at six miles per hour. This project was all well and good, but it was difficult to get the amount of steam needed to allow the car to go any significant distance.

A break through in hybrid car development finally came when Robert Anderson developed an electric powered car in 1839. It was the first among its kind. The car was built in Scotland.

This model electric car was a highly applauded innovation of its time. However, the only problem was that it was very difficult to recharge the car's battery. Some pioneers did come after Anderson, but they had the same problem of getting the battery recharged easily.

Eventually, in the year 1898, Porsche developed an electric and fuel combination combustion engine that was the first of its kind. The car was called the Lohner Electric Chaise and it could travel for up to 40 miles just using its batteries.

Soon pioneers combined both a gas and a battery powered engine to power what would become today's hybrid car. In 1999, Honda made a leap into the US market. It came out with the Insight. This was a lightweight two-door hybrid. Since then, hybrid cars have just been evolving and improving into what you see on the markets today. Hybrid cars are not just for techies who think it's cool to combine battery and fuel power to get them where they need to go. Hybrid cars started out simple, and they are still simple today.

These days hybrid cars are becoming more and more popular as people understand them better. In the 21st century, hybrids saw a boom in sales when the Toyota Prius came out on the streets. It was the first hybrid with four doors that was marketed for the USA.

Soon after, the Ford Escape hybrid became the very first SUV hybrid ever made. So there it is in a nutshell, the history of the hybrid car - today's modern auto. - 21396
