Snowmobile Accidents - How To Avoid Them

By Gregory Paul

In Ontario, Canada, there has been an encouraging decline of snowmobile related accidents from1997 to 2007. From 47, there has been a dramatic decline to 17 in ten years. Officials are happy to relay that probably people have gotten the message on how to safely enjoy the sport. Apparently, more sports enthusiasts are joining the bandwagon of responsible snowmobile riding. It has been noted that ninety percent of reported accidents happened off the legal trail.

Many experts will say that the most important advice a rider could follow is to stay on established trail systems. When out of the trails, there are many dangers abound. There are fences, rocks, and a multitude of unseen hazards. It is safe to speculate that those who decide to go off trail are irresponsible drivers who disregard safety precautions and do just about anything because they want to.

Driving a snowmobile off season is not such a cool idea. Some sledders like to take their rig out for a spin when balmy spring weather approaches. This is the time when ice covered lakes begin to thaw. They should think of the miss plunges that almost killed some thrill seekers.

Take this as a warning. In 2006, in Fort McPherson, two men tried to cross a river in one vehicle when they ran into a patch of open water. The other one was pulled out and rushed to a nearby health center where he later died, and the other one was never found.

To lessen the risk of accidents, some officials have sanctioned precaution measures. In Middletown New York, it is imperative for riders to take and pass a Snowmobile Certification Course. The course provide instructions on proper riding, safety equipment, and the rules of the trail. The course is given by certified instructors.

In Yellowstone National Park, they require commercial guides for snowmobile riders. This sanction is one of the most successful attempts ever. It has been noted that there was a startling decrease in snowmobile riders harassing wildlife, venturing off limits, having accidents, violating speeding and safety precautions. The guides are certified and trained by park officials.

Steps in improving the quality and security of the sport has been taken by manufacturers as well. these days you will find snowmobiles that come with even better machines that provide for more comfort and safety. They pack more power for electrical accessories and are cleaner and quieter as well. Some helmets have built in communication devices so riders can talk to each other with ease. The extra power also provide means of heating for the comfort of riders.

To make the snowmobile riding sport safe, multiple precautions are in place. The government and business sectors have done their part in making this adventure safe, and fun. That's how this sport should stay - sound and exciting. Riders can actually make this experience almost if not 100% safe if they just follow the measures that were placed for their protection. - 21396

Q & A About Rental Insurance

By Jason Hall

There has been many a debate about car rental insurance and whether it is a necessity or not. The one thing that you must keep in mind is that car rental companies make money on selling you this option, so they want you to take it, plus it covers their vehicle, which honestly is the only thing that they are truly concerned about.

Here are some of the most asked questions about rental insurance, and the answer are most likely going to surprise many of you.

Q: AM I COVERED UNDER MY OWN CAR INSURANCE, EVEN IF DRIVING A RENTAL CAR?

A: YES....Many insurance companies will still cover you when you are driving in a rental car. However, it is advisable that you contact your insurance company, prior to picking up your rental vehicle, just to make sure that is so. Otherwise you will not be completely confident that you will be covered and may spend money, on rental insurance from the rental company, you could have otherwise saved.

Q: IF I USE A CREDIT CARD FOR MY CAR RENTAL, WONT THAT COVER ME FOR ANY DAMAGES?

A: YES and NO....Most of the major credit card companies, such as Visa, MasterCard or Discover, offer you additional insurance protection when you use the card to rent a vehicle. Because this may not apply for all credit cards companies you should check with your credit company prior to renting your car. This will give you a piece of mind when turning down the rental insurance for the rental car company.

Q: IF I FIND OUT THAT I AM COVERED UNDER MY OWN CAR INSURANCE AND MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY SHOULD I STILL TAKE OUT THE CAR RENTAL INSURANCE?

A: This is a definite NO! Most car rental companies will try and convince you that you are only covered if you take their insurance out, but this could not be further from the truth. The insurance that you are provided by your credit card and insurance companies will offer you all the insurance that you are required to have while driving a rental. Rental companies only push their own insurance as a way to make more money offer of the rental of a car.

So before yo arrive at the rental car company to pick up your vehicle check with your insurance and credit car companies to see what you are covered for. This will make you more confident when you refuse the rental companies insurance and you will be saving a lot of money. - 21396

How Did The Automobile First Come About?

By Ron Black McCarthy

The majority of the Earths population have come to rely on motor vehicles as their main method of transport and as they are such a common modern convenience, it is difficult to imagine life without them. The motor vehicle came to prominence in the 20th century but its origins came about before that, so who was the very first to take the horses off the carriage and make a self-propelled vehicle?

Ferdinand Verbiest is said to have made the very first construct that could reasonably be named an automobile in around 1672. It was a very small vehicle, incapable of carrying a driver or passenger, however it did move on its own through the power of steam. Verbiest built the small toy-like vehicle as a present for the Chinese Emperor of the time.

Following this came several different versions of self-propelled mechanical and crude internal combustion engines. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot was the first to have one of these to his name in 1769, however there was speculation as to whether or not Cugnots machine ever worked properly.

1806 saw the invention of the first internal combustion engine by the hand of Franois Isaac de Rivaz, a Swiss inventor and was powered by a mix of hydrogen and oxygen. The design was not particularly successful. It was, obviously, a comparatively basic engine and although, strictly speaking it was functional, it was not particularly efficient and most certainly did not accommodate a comfortable ride.

The man who is usually accredited with the invention of the modern automobile is Karl Benz, although there were others working on it at around the same time such as Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach, and Siegfried Marcus. Benz completed his first Motorwagen in 1885 and was granted a patent for it in early 1886. He then began promoting the vehicles in order to try and sell them to the wealthy and between 1888 and 1893 he had sold 25 vehicles.

DMG (Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft / Daimler Motor Company) was founded in 1890 by Daimler and Maybach and under the brand name Daimler, sold their first vehicle in 1892, which was simply a horse-drawn carriage, with an engine of their own design fitted into it. By around 1895 they had built around 30 vehicles, yet they, and Benz, seemed to be unaware of each others early work.

Right towards the end of the 1900s the crankshaft and piston engine came about and throughout the 20th century developed into the sophisticated piece of technology we know it as today. Mergers between DMG and Benz in later years bore the Daimler-Benz company and the Mercedes-Benz automobile range. - 21396

A How-to On A DIY Hydrogen Generator

By Alexis Jameson

You'll find a lot of different benefits when you start using a DIY hydrogen generator. Some of them will make you sound selfless, like knowing how much an alternate source of energy will help the environment and not wanting to use up a dwindling natural resource. But your biggest motivation will be all about your personal gain - saving money because you no longer have to buy that gas that seems to rise in price every day.

You will need to get a good idea of what you're actually looking before you start doing anything. In the end, you will indeed be powering a car using water, but there are a few steps in between, mainly the fact you'll have to first turn the water into the kind of elements that can be used to make the Brown's gas the car will run off of.

While you could just go get a hydrogen car, it would be very expensive if you could even find one. When you can't, making the generator is your next best option. This probably sounds like a lot of work, but it's really much less threatening than it seems, depending on how you go about getting things done.

Your first option is the easiest, though it will also be the most expensive. How expensive it will be depends on how smart a shopper you are, because you're going to need to look for a hydrogen kit. They make these for both cars and trucks, but also for all types of vehicles in a more universal model.

If you think you can handle doing more work, you can pick up a guide to help you along, as well as a bunch of tools and materials and get started on your own. This will save you a lot of money, and a lot of these things you'll need might well already be in your home. Even if they aren't, they're very cheap.

If you feel up to taking things a step further, you'll be able to spend almost nothing. This is because the materials in general are so common, you'll be able to scrap most of them from items already in your garage. You'll need to put time and effort into this, though, so make sure you feel up to the task ahead of time.

All these choices will end up benefiting cost and effort to some level. Base your decision on what feels best for you. In the end, no matter how you get your generator, you'll be able to keep money when you need it most and help the planet at the same time. - 21396

How Hybrid Cars Work

By Anton Rowd

The Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is quite the technological wonder. As a work in progress, the Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology has done much to improve the gas-dependence situation and has saved several households and individuals from having to spend so much on fossil fuels.

What is it under the hybrid car hood that is creating all these raving reviews that seem to take consumers by the neck and lead them to their nearest hybrid car dealer? Let's try to take a look at just how hybrid cars work.

The Combination

The secret is in the term, "hybrid." A hybrid car basically just brings out and maximizes all that fuel economy and consumption and electrical power can do together. By putting together both a gas engine and an electrical motor, the combination permits the car to go back and forth between the energy sources. The usual case in a hybrid car though is that it really depends basically on the battery and electrical motors to run the whole vehicle.

So what is the gas for? Well, the vehicle will still need fuel to run a motor that charges the battery which in turn runs the whole car. But the beauty of this set up is that not much fuel is needed to charge up those batteries; thus, hybrid cars really only need so much fuel to fill their significantly smaller gas tanks and therefore it saves people from having to spend so much money on gas.

Going The Distance

In order to actually see how a hybrid car works, one would have to take one for a spin on a full tank and compare the results in mileage with a car that runs only on gas. One will definitely see the huge difference in cars dependent on electric motors. Going a great distance is achieved by the way the hybrid works. There are 3 essential technologies that allow this to happen.

The first technology in hybrid cars is known as the regenerative braking. This includes an electric engine that applies resistance to the drive train which, in turn, causes the wheels to stop or to slow down. The energy from the wheels turns the engine which in real time acts as a generator and transforms the energy wasted during coasting and braking into electricity. This electricity is then reserved and stored in the battery until it is required by other functions in the electric motor.

The next technology used in hybrid cars is the elect motor assist. This elect motor assist provides extra power to help the motor in acceleration like ascending elevated terrains or speeding up. Smaller engines are used which is more efficient compared to when internal combustion engine is used.

Another technology that is starting to pick up in a lot of modern hybrid vehicles is known simply as automatic start and shutdown. When a hybrid vehicle stops in the middle of traffic or at a stoplight, the whole engine will shutdown as well. This prevents the engine from wasting energy and fuel from just being idle. And when the accelerator is pressed again, the engine will automatically start up so that acceleration is made available. It's a nifty option that has gained popularity from city street drivers. Combine these three technologies and this is essentially how hybrid cars work. - 21396
