GPS Systems And You

By Matt Meeano

GPS systems are used for a wide range of purposes. From getting you to your destination to keeping track of your children, they are gradually becoming more and more ubiquitous in our culture. All GPS navigation devices work on the same principle but the GPS systems themselves vary in their application.

The most used GPS system is the Car GPS device. This is a fantastic device that will calculate the route from wherever your present position is, to the desired end point. All you will need to know is the address, or place name if its a stadium or other point of interest. After this information is loaded into the device, it will perform course calculations and graphically display directions to your destination. If you need to deviate from the planned course, for a rest stop or restaurant, the GPS device will quickly recalculate the new coordinates and map out a revised route. Another nice option on some of the newer models is the ability to hear voice commands. The voice feature allwos drivers to remain focused on the road in order to minimize accidents.

Car GPS systems are used most extensively by consumers. Simply put the target address into the system and you get detailed directions from your current location to the destination. This beats having to plot the route out on your map. It comes in handy when you accidentally make wrong turns or have an unscheduled pit stop off your route. The GPS system will quickly recalculate a route to the desired location. This is immensely easy on drivers and they no longer have to deal with pulling the map out again and re-plotting their route. It is all done in seconds. Additionally, many GPS systems have a voice feature that gives audio instructions so that you may keep your eyes on the road. These GPS systems can also be incorporated in vehicles to show the nearest gas stations when the fuel level is low. They also can be programmed to show places of interest such as restaurants.

Parents want to keep track of their children and GPS for children is a boon to them. GPS navigation allows parents the peace of mind to know that if their child is ever lost they can find them. Simply by placing a small GPS locator device on the child will allow the parent to use GPS tracking to find them if they are ever missing.

If you have been shopping online for GPS you will already know that there are tons of different models and manufacturers out there. The market leader in GPS devices is Garmin. There are other big GPS companies such as Magellan and Tom Tom but Garmin is the one that is most recognizable. The number of different devices these manufacturers have brought to market is considerable. The best place to find them all and compare is to go online and see.

Finding all of the different models and manufacturers will be difficult unless you go online and search. When you do, you will see hundreds of models to choose from. The biggest names in the industry are Garmin, followed by Magellan and Tom Tom. If you're interested in keeping your family safe or removing stress on your next long drive out of town, consider getting a GPS system. - 21396

Hybrid Car Comparison

By Anton Rowd

Hybrid cars operate on the concept of utilizing gas and electric motors in maximizing fuel consumption and longer mileage. However, this does not mean that all the hybrid vehicles available on the market all achieve the same mileage and use up the same amount of fuel. Here is a hybrid car comparison of some vehicles from different brand manufacturers.

2007 Prius

Prius are out in the market and sells around $23,000 give or take a few dollars. With a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that can manage 76 horsepower and an electric motor with 67 horsepower, a total electric motor assist rate would be about 110 horsepower. The Prius is a front-wheel drive, four door hatchback and is said to achieve 48 miles to the gallon in the city and 45 miles to the gallon on the highway or on longer drives.

Camry 2007

The Camry from Toyota is just as popular as their Prius luxury hybrid with similar features such as four-door, front-wheel drive. It does have a larger engine, a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder that can achieve 147 horsepower. Its electric motor is much weaker and achieves 40 horsepower which means that mileage and gas is sacrificed. Still, for a hybrid, it performs much better than conventional vehicles and can get about 33 miles to the gallon in both the city and on the highway.

2007 Saturn Aura Green Line

Running with a whopping 164 horsepower, the Saturn features a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine and an electric starting assist motor. This motor basically shuts down the vehicle when it's on standstill and then automatically restarts it when it moves again.

While this may save some gas because none is spent while it's idle, this is not as helpful as having a real electric motor assist while the vehicle is moving. This allows for 24 miles to the gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway; still a fraction better than a conventional gas-powered vehicle.

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Probably the next best thing to a Toyota Prius, the Civic hybrid is one powerful sedan that not only plays the part but looks the part as well. Sleek and luxurious, this beauty from Honda has a tiny 1.3 liter four-cylinder 8-valve engine and full electric motor support that promises 110 horsepower when both engines are in operation to make the car move. The car boasts 49 miles to the gallon on city streets and 51 miles to the gallon on the highway; now that's competition for Toyota if they haven't seen it yet.

It all boils down to the technology being used in a hybrid car. For the best performance, you may want to choose one that uses less gas and has full electric motor support to give you the best mileage. Make sure to study your hybrid car comparison before making your hybrid choice.

For more hybrid car comparison information, look for more reviews online. From there, you will be able to find the best car that suits your lifestyle. - 21396

What's In An Instrument Panel?

By Lyle Ford

Most of us drive a car every day, but how many of us pay much attention to the instrument panels in our car. Sure, we all pay attention to the speedometer so that we do not get pulled over, and even then sometimes we do not pay close enough attention to keep ourselves from getting pulled over and getting that speeding ticket.

We should be paying more attention to some of the other gauges in our cars for very good reason. The reason is simple. They are there to alert us to the condition of the car as we drive down the road. The cars gauges can be our warning that something is wrong with the car before everything breaks.

Most of us do pay attention, at least to some degree, at our speedometer and our gas gauge. However, many vehicles today do not have much more in the way of gauges, but rather have warning lights. I am sure that the auto makers have discovered that the average driver never looked at the other gauges and were not educated about when they should be concerned, so likely decided that warning lights were likely a better route to getting the drivers attention when there was something that needed attention.

If you're lucky enough and have a car that still has gauges, you should pay attention to them. The water temperature gauge is there so that you know when things are heating up. This way, you can make sure that the car is not getting too hot. A car overheating is a particular problem in the heat of the summer time. The average street car normally operates between 200-210 degrees Fahrenheit. If you see the water temperature creeping above that, you should pay close attention and stop the vehicle if it continues to climb, otherwise you will be on the side of the road with a bunch of steam coming out and you could possibly ruin some major parts of your car's engine.

The oil pressure gauge is another gauge found in dash of a car. The oil gauge reads the pressure of the oil through the engine. This is good to know; because a lack of oil pressure usually means something serious is wrong and large problems are around the corner if you do not get it checked very soon. The loss of oil pressure, whatever the cause, can mean that the engine is not being lubricated like it needs to be. If you do not stop the car and turn it off, you are asking for big trouble.

A tachometer gauge is the gauge that tells you the RPM's (revolutions per minute that the crank of the engine is turning). This is important, because the higher the RPM's, the faster everything is turning and in turn, is more vulnerable to breaking. Street cars generally run between 2000-3000 RPM's while driving down the road, reaching no more than 5000-6000 RPM's when getting the car to speed in a lower gear. For some comparison, NASCAR race cars run around 8000-9000 RPM's and Indy cars run between 12,000-13,000 RPM's.

The oil temperature gauge is less common, even in cars that have lots of gauges. However, if you have one it is good to understand it. While oil pressure and water temperature are more important, oil temperature can also signal a potential problem. When the oil gets too hot in the engine, it breaks down and loses its ability to lubricate properly. The lubrication in the engine is crucial to the internal, moving parts. When those parts do not have sufficient lubrication, they heat up beyond the capacity of the part and break, destroying the engine. Most cars that have gauges still do not have an oil temperature gauge, but if they do pay attention to it.

The instrument panels in our cars are something that more people should pay attention to. If you have gauges, you should learn what each gauge really means and pay attention. However, many cars today have warning lights instead of gauges. In my humble opinion, warning lights in your cars instrument panel usually come on too late. Speaking as someone who understands and prefers gauges, you need to understand that if a light comes on in your dash, you are already into the trouble zone and should park the car very soon. - 21396

How Alexa and Google Pagerank can Help You Find a Better Car

By Jim Carlton

Although I use the internet throughout the day to update myself on news and to identify good deals on cars for sale, until recently, I was unaware of several tools that could actually help me make more informed searches and decisions. I found it annoying that several of the top results in Google were actually lower quality auto classifieds than those on the second and even third page with car advertisements not being posted for several days at stretch. But then I asked a friend of mine for help and soon discovered the wonders of using Alexa and Google Pagerank together.

Despite unfounded reservations, my friend convinced me to switch browsers and use Firefox instead. In hindsight, it was a great move and I realized that not only was Firefox faster, it also saved the sites I had open in multiple tabs and reopened them for me when I restarted the browser. We then downloaded and installed Alexas site ranking and Googles Pagerank toolbars.

Alexa is one of the best-known site ranking services and they have a straightforward and easy to use toolbar. On installation, it displays the ranking websites you visit using a graph of the daily traffic trends and a numeric ranking. The really helpful quality for me was the ranking shown next to each of the search results. A bar displayed next to each search result displays the overall ranking of a particular website.

Pagerank ranks websites on their authority by using a combination of sites linking into a particular website, freshness of content, age of the site and the volume of visitors. It ranks sites on a scale of zero to ten with ten being the best score. It is normally displayed in the upper section of your browser. Unlike Alexa, several websites can achieve the same score and the scores are update after longer intervals of time.

Once you're done installing and familiarizing your self with these tools begin searching. Type in the most apt keywords like used cars on sale and your search results now actually have meaning. I filter sites in the search results based on the Alexa rank, clicking sites within a ranking of sixty-to-seventy thousand. I then explore each site to see which ones rank higher n Google. I now have a great resource that lets me find the best deals available with fresh offers for all kinds of cars on these different websites.

The use of these tools is not restricted to the search for great deals on cars alone. It can be used practically for all the things you search for on the internet. Its simple and once you get past installing and getting acquainted with these utilities you wont want to search the web in any other way. - 21396
