Active Crossover In A Car Stereo System

By Chris Green

Crossovers are a very important part of the stereo system of the car. They are generally meant to filter the signal by allowing a particular frequency and send it to the amplifier to give a clear audio with maximum clarity. There are two types of crossovers passive and active. The passive crossovers have the possibility of causing loss of volume due to disturbance and are also considered to be hard to control and adjust it. They are placed between the amplifier and speaker. On the other hand the active crossovers remove the line signal and provide a better sound quality. The adjustment of the active crossovers is comparatively easier to adjust. Since the active crossovers play an important role in providing clear audio, this article discusses some directions on how to set up active crossover.

A three way crossover is typically used for audio systems in car. Therefore for setting up active crossover, the following things will be required: three way active crossover, a tri amped audio system, and few basic tools.

In the first step, the active crossover is mounted somewhere between the head unit of the stereo and the amplifiers of the system. There are two options of the location of the crossovers. If the crossovers do not have to be disturbed or adjusted after installing it, they can be placed below the panel of the dash. This way it cannot be disturbed. But in case the user wants it to be easily accessible for repairing, it can be placed below the seat or in trunk.

Then all the possible electrical connections are made. The crossovers run approximately for a dc voltage of about 12. A suitable connection to the battery is needed. Suitable Ground line should run to car's chassis. Connection to the electrical signal which is switched by means of ignition should also run. It is done to prevent the battery getting drained while the car does not run. To know about wiring instructions, the literature should be consulted as it is a vital part in making the connection work properly.

A link to the ground should be made to the car's chassis. To avoid drainage from the cross overs battery an electrical signal must be made to run. The low pass filter of the cross over can be set at 80 Hz. Only frequencies like bass and kick drum having a frequency of 80 Hz or below can pass through. This kind of filter setting is essential for using sub woofer routed from the output.

Then the high pass filter's crossover point is set at 3000 HZ so that it would be easy to send high frequencies like Cymbals and acoustics harmonics to the tweeters.

Next the band pass filter is set for the system's midrange speakers. Then the amplifiers are set at low frequencies less than 80 Hertz also it is greater than 3000 HZ.

The final step is to make sure the system is set up properly. This can be done by playing some music and adjusting the filters in such a way that is comfortable to listen. Once these steps are followed the audio clarity is improved. Therefore these directions on how to set up active crossover would be useful for setting up the crossovers and improve the quality of the audio. - 21396
