Airport Hire Car - What Happens If They Dont Have Your Reservation

By Liam Nelson

Traveling to any new city is exciting - if you're prepared. Most travelers do choose to rent, or hire, a car when they arrive at their destination, but without making arrangements ahead of time, too many travelers can get overcharged when they are in a hurry. When you arrive, make sure you review the airport hire car options you have.

At some airports, all the car rental counters are in one section of the arrival terminal. This certainly makes it a bit easier to find the type of car you want and can afford, and you also have the chance of going counter to counter to see what types of deals they have.

If you have any type of customer loyalty card from one of the larger rental companies, it's always a good idea to check with them first, if they have a counter there of course. If you don't have one of these cards you can still find a decent price if you have the time to do some research and are willing not to get pressured into anything by rental agents who say, "This is our last car, take it or leave it."

If you don't have a membership card with one of the larger rental companies, no problem. Some companies are still willing to give you some decent upgrades. Something as simple an upgrade to a larger car can be worth a wait in line, or even getting a GPS system - which is almost a necessity when it comes to finding your way around new cities. Even having the option of a free upgrade to a car with an automatic transmission can turn any vacation into pure heaven if you can't drive a stick shift and that was all they had to give you!

Don't sign a thing until you know whether or not you'll be charged for mileage. Some companies do, some don't. Some give you a certain amount for free, then charge for any overages. This might be acceptable to some people, but if you're in a situation where you need to drive another 100 miles to your hotel or grandma's house, this could end up costing you big time in the long run!

Also be careful about buying additional insurance coverage. This can be very expensive, and in some cases, totally unnecessary. Insurance coverage is a big money maker for rental companies and the rental agents will do their best to explain the horrors that await you in case you are in an accident with their car. Before committing to this expense, it might be well worth a call to your insurance company to find out what you're already covered for out of state or out of country.

Last but not least, before driving off in your new rental car, check it for previous damage! You don't want to get charged for nicks and scratches that were there before you got in. - 21396
