What Is Better Then A Yukon

By Tony Johnson

Yukon and Denali are GMC's versions of the General Motors SUVs also sold with Chevrolet and Cadillac nameplates. Yukon is an upscale sibling of the Chevrolet Tahoe. The longer Yukon XL is a retrimmed Chevy Suburban. Denali and XL Denali are Yukon's luxury versions.

You can get the yukon xl in either the 1/2 ton 1500 or the 3/4 ton 2500. In the denalis, you get front bucket seats but will have to ask to replace a 3 person bench if you want them in a yukon. You can also replace the next row from a bench to bucket seats. The third row bench comes with the yukon xls and denalis, but you will have to ask for it with the regular yukon.

The powerful v8 engine comes standard in all models, but varies a little in each. The yukon gets the 4.8l engine standard which pumps out 285 hp. The yukon xl will get the 5.3l engine standard and that cranks out 295 hp. The standard engine for the denali is the 6.0l, which has an impressive 335 hp. The yukon xl gets a 6.0l engine with the option to go with the 8.1l engine.

Everyone one of these models will come with automatic transmissions setup with GM's tow haul mode. Of course you get all wheel drive included with the denali. With the yukon you can get either gms autotrac 4 wheel drive or rear wheel drive. The 2500 yukon xls that have 2wd get traction control.

All models have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and a tire-pressure monitor. GM's Stabilitrak antiskid system became standard for Yukon 1500 and Denali models during the '05 model year. Front side airbags are standard on Denalis, available elsewhere. Optional for XL 2500s is GM's Quadrasteer 4-wheel steering, which reduces the turning circle at low speeds and is designed to enhance stability at higher speeds and when towing.

Yukons get standard 16-inch wheels or optional 17s. Denalis have standard 17-inch wheels. Chrome-finished 20-inch alloy wheels are newly available for Denalis. GM's OnStar assistance is standard on all models.

Denalis come with power-adjustable pedals and a multizone automatic climate system with front/rear controls. All are available for Yukons. Optional for all models is an audio/navigation system, which adds a control touch screen.

We have no specifics yet about the redesign itself, but look for huskier styling, slightly larger dimensions, and a possible switch to independent rear suspension. The last would help ride and handling and also make room for a fold-flush 3rd-row seat to match Ford Expedition. A new "strong hybrid" gas-electric powertrain option is rumored for some near-term point. - 21396
