What You Need To Learn When Learning To Drive
Learning to drive is a very nerve wracking experience for the person learning and the person teaching. So lets say you have a nervous mother, well then you should probably have someone else teach you because I can tell you from experience your nervous mother is only going to get more nervous. Which can lead to yelling, shrieking, and all around freaking out. I only tell you this because I am a mother who does the freaking out.
Your experience while learning to drive can teach you a lot. The more time spent on honing your different skills in different conditions can help you to remain confident and calm while driving. You will also be more prepared and quicker to react to any challenging situation.
The first thing you should do is practice in an empty parking lat so you can learn how the car handles in certain situations. Practice the braking and turning. After you have practiced the basics of driving in forward, reverse, and braking and you know how to handle the car then it is time to move on to back roads to practice more skills.
There is less traffic on back roads so it will be safer for you and other drivers while you are learning techniques such as the right speed to turn a curve, stopping completely at stop signs, keeping a following distance that is safe, making left turns on two lane roads, and keeping a constant speed while going uphill.
Before you drive on the bigger and busier street you will need to master all of these skills first. Once you have then you will learn to change lanes properly, merge into traffic, maintain a safe speed, and use on and off ramps. You will find that there are several techniques you will need to master.
Learning to anticipate and watch for problems from other drivers is very important. Cars that switch lanes without signaling or that pull in front of you can be very dangerous. As a new driver it is hard to anticipate what another driver is going to do, or what speed and distance is required for any given situation. These are safety habits that will develop once you have some driving experience.
When you have gotten comfortable with these skills you will need to start practicing in more conditions. Driving at dusk or dawn can be dangerous because of the glare the sun puts on the windshield, but you will need to practice this anyway. Driving at nighttime will greatly diminish your visibility but you should practice this as well. After that you will want to learn to drive at a safe speed on slick roads so you should practice in rainy or snowy weather.
Now that you have the skills to drive you should probably consider learning some proper maintenance for you car such as: changing a tire, pumping gas, jump starting a car, and maintaining air pressure in the tires. You will then have all of the necessary skills to start driving. Always buckle your seat belt, adjust your seat and the mirrors, and always under no circumstance should you break any safety rules. It is a fabulous experience to drive but when the safety rules are not followed things can go horribly wrong very quickly. - 21396
