Harley Davidson Celebrated 105 Years At The Top with Brakes In Their Hubs!

By John Vincent

Who on earth decided that 105 years was a milestone event? Apparently Harley Davidson did. Not content with celebrating their Centenary in style, the ever saturnalian motorcycle manufacturer pulled out all the stops to celebrate their 105th anniversary, almost completely ignoring their loyal owners club who were celebrating a true milestone. 2008 was also the Harley Owners Group's (H.O.G) 25th Silver Anniversary.

To celebrate the occasion were a few notable events. The first was a four day festival of non-stop activities and music in Milwaukee City centred primarily along the lakefront area. The mighty H.O.G. held their event at Miller Park, there was an organised run to the whole thing beginning at 105 separate Harley dealers from all around the states and Harley Davidson themselves released a total of 14 separate models of extremely special limited edition bikes.

These limited edition bikes were all painted in the same anniversary livery of copper and black with matching seat and tank decorations as well as some carefully considered detailing, again in copper or black, to many other parts such as the air cleaners or head casings. Some of the models also received a Harley Davidson first in the form of optional ABS with Brembo brake disks with the top of the range machines fitted as standard.

Not content with implementing an existing system the image-conscious brand felt it necessary to design the system from the bottom up, hiding many of the elements completely from sight within the wheel hubs themselves. The result also ended up being rather lighter than the existing methods would have allowed.

One of the bikes to receive this treatment was the top of the range CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Already a bike with more features than a headline festival, including a built in navigation system, Harmon-Kardon stereo system, Cruise Control and even heated seats, the Anniversary edition is truly an incredible touring bike to behold.

The best thing of all though is the engine. It's what makes Harley Davidson's so iconic in the first place and the Twin Cam 110 (1803cc) motor they use in this machine keeps all the character of noise and shake we have come to expect. Extensive rubber mounting ensures the shake stays with the engine though, keeping the rider and passenger free of stress able to enjoy the ride and just listen to that glorious noise.

So who would ride a bike like this? Maybe the same kind or person who would ride a Honda Goldwing? No, I doubt it. This bike might fit into the same category as the ubiquitous 'wing' but it has infinitely more style. After all, it's a Harley Davidson and they know a thing or two about image don't you think? Oh, and did I mention that the brakes work on this one? - 21396
