Electric Cars: The New Generation Of Motoring

By Michael Skatoli

Within the next year electric cars, or zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) as they are sometimes called, will be an everyday sight on roads right across the globe. The stuff of science fiction films will have have become science fact.

Basic electric cars are already available to consumers in many places and are set to become significantly more sophisticated and widespread in the next few years.

The idea of an electric car is nothing new, it has been around for decades. However, the urgent need to cut carbon emissions in a bid to slow global warming has sped up the development of the next generation of road transport.

Affordable electric cars and ZEVs are already being built and will soon be widely available in car dealers around the world. We are already familiar with hybrid vehicles, which have been available for many years. These vehicles use both electric and gasoline propulsion to aid in the reduction of emissions. Electric cars take clean motoring to a higher level, in that they have no emissions at all - they don't even have a tail pipe. The benefits of this are set to be dramatic, particularly in polluted heavily populated areas, as electric vehicles and ZEVs become the norm.

So how does the electric car work? Electric vehicles use electric motors and motor controllers rather than the traditional internal combustion engine. Instead of standard gasoline, these cars are powered by electricity from battery packs, although modern methods of energy storage are being developed that are likely to replace batteries in the near future. Already, special refueling stops for the electric car revolution are springing up on roadsides around the world where car owners can stop and refuel their electric cars, just like at a normal filling station.

That said, for some people, the transition from the conventional gasoline car that we all know and love to electric cars and ZEVs will require a huge leap of faith. However, electric cars have so many benefits that the transition should be a pretty painless one.

Running costs - The fact that electric vehicles are cheaper to run and cost less to keep on the road will likely convince their fiercest detractors. Car owners will get a lot more miles for their money and the cost of maintaining these vehicles will be a lot cheaper than servicing a normal car.

Global warming - As electric vehicles become more widespread, the benefits to the environment will be very significant. This is especially true in large city areas where smog and poor air quality at street level presents a significant health hazard to people.

Some worries do remain over electric cars, such as the length of time it takes to recharge batteries, the top speeds and acceleration of the vehicles, and concerns such as handling and performance. That said, as car producers invest more and more money into perfecting these vehicles, these worries are likely to be dealt with sooner rather than later. - 21396
