Commerical Vehicle Insurance

By Matt Hellstrom

Getting commercial vehicle insurance is a necessary expense for any business that uses vehicles for commercial purposes. Unlike regular auto insurance, commercial insurance for vehicles is used not for private purpose but strictly for business. This is to protect against accidents, theft, fire incident or liability that may be incurred in an accident during the normal course of business.

Despite some of the inherent risks of maintaining and using vehicles in a commercial context, it should not be at all difficult to procure commercial vehicle insurance. While the probability of accidents can be high in some areas of the country, this is an issue that can be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and steps taken to reduce incidents.

Whenever a vehicle is used solely for business purposes, for instance, transportation of goods and/or people, it should be considered for commercial vehicle insurance. This is were a professional insurance broker or agent can guide the the operators/owners of the commercial vehicle. Any such broker or agent should be an expert in the field of commercial vehicle insurance with solid experience in handling your particular needs.

Factors that commercial vehicle operators should consider when making their decisions on the purchase of commercial insurance for their business vehicles include the specific use of the vehicle to be insured. What will the vehicle actually be used to convey or what task is the vehicle designed to perform? Who will operate the vehicle? These are considerations that will impact the premiums and coverage available.

If it is goods, are they industrial goods like flammables? Is it a truck used for local and long haul? If not, is it for local transportation like a courier service? Does it have attached to it heavy equipment like cranes and towing vans? This information must be adequately set forth and explained.

It should be noted that commercial auto insurance prices and policies will differ with vehicle types, usage and classifications. A look at what the commercial vehicle insurance covers would give commercial vehicle owners insight to its necessity. The insurance needs to cover liability for each driver as well as collision damage and even comprehensive coverage (covers damage due to theft, fire, or glass breakage) for each vehicle. Also bodily injury and liability, property damage and liability, motor truck cargo and medical payments are necessary components.

You'd be in for a rude awakening if you forego proper commercial vehicle insurance on a vehicle used for commercial purposes. Insurance is one area of your business you should never skimp on. The potential for disaster is too great, both in the sense of liability for damages or injury and the loss of a business asset. - 21396
