Snow Tyres And Winter Tyres What Are They Good For?

By Brian Kirkland

When you are preparing for a drive in winter conditions, winter tyres are a must. The dangers that come with the cold environment must be respected during the winter season. Hazards such as sleet, snow and ice can be fatal in some cases. Winter tyres (also known as snow tyres) can protect you from these possible dangers not only that, they are design to be fully functional in extremely low temperatures.

When you first start to use snow tyres, you should understand when the best time is to put these on your motor vehicle. The usual rule is to attach them to the car before the first predicted snow fall of the year, usually until the temperature of the year decreases to about 5 degrees. I usually fit the winter car tyres in November, but this may not be a good idea for everyone due to different time zone in each country.

Many consumers of winter tyres are concerned at the wear of the tread on them as they seem to degrade more rapidly than normal all weather tyres, not only that they are allot more expensive too. One thing you should always bear in mind is that the risk of losing your tyre tread is far less of an issue than losing grip on the road while travelling at speed. With that said its important to point out the best time to buy cheap winter tyres is actually during the summer, due to low demands you can get yourself some very good deals.

These tyres are designed to maximise traction on icy roads and this is all because of the little bumps and grooves on the tyre. Scientific studies suggest that these minor design changes can dramatically increase the grip of the car by 40% at least on winter roads. This number however is lowered to around 10% when taking black ice into consideration. This 10% can still be the difference of what keeps you on the road as opposed to slipping of it with a pair of cheap tyres.

If you still wish for more traction on your snow tyre then I would recommened getting a good set of wheel chains and studs. These go over the tyre and will give the driver even more grip than usuall. Another advantage of these chains is their ability to break up the snow and ice as they move along the road. With measures such as these taking place you will be glad to know that you have done your best to protect not only yourself and your passengers but other road users too.

When you are buying winter tyres, go with the rule that the newer the tyre the better it will be. This is down to the fact that the technology that designs the tyres these days are constantly evolving and advancing, this usually means that the latest tyres will always be the safest and most road worthy.

The majority of people don't understand the importance of these tyres. The greatest winter tyres today can give so much more grip on the winter roads and they are also so much cheaper today than they used to be, you may be surprised to find some good deals on snow tyres during the summer season.

Think of winter tyres as a safety measure for yourself and your passengers, they are not a waste of money as some people may think that tyre companies are capitalising and offering a gimmick tyre, this is not the case. The most important point of all however is that "all weather" tyres should never be used as a replacement for snow tyres as they don't come close to offering the same amount of traction. - 21396
